Impact Beyond Sustainability

This project goes further than sustainability and also supports the following Sustainable Developement Goals:

Aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere.

Creates jobs and drives sustainable economic growth.

Promotes sustainable consumption and production.

Combats climate change and its effects.

Safeguards ecosystems, forests, and biodiversity.

The roots of the challenge

In Panama, centuries of deforestation have left deep scars. Vast areas of tropical rainforest were cleared to make way for cattle ranching. What were once thriving ecosystems full of native trees became degraded pastures. Soils lost their fertility, wildlife lost its habitat, and biodiversity was fragmented.

Local families had few alternatives beyond low-paid ranching jobs. Communities entered a cycle where degraded land produced low returns, poverty persisted, and young generations faced limited prospects. At the same time, the loss of forest cover meant carbon emissions rose, contributing to climate change and reducing the region’s resilience.

From pasture to productive forests

The Tropical Mix project (Gold Standard ID GS2940) was created to reverse this cycle. Across 13,242 hectares in the provinces of Darién, Veraguas, Chiriquí and Bocas del Toro, degraded lands are being restored into vibrant forests and productive agro-forestry systems.

The project’s model combines three pillars:
– Reforestation with a mosaic of native and selected non-native tree species.
– Organic cocoa production integrated under shade-grown agro-forestry systems.
– Sustainable FSC-certified timber production with long-term management.

Certified under the Gold Standard for the Global Goals, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and EU Organic Cocoa, Tropical Mix represents a holistic solution. The crediting period began in 1995 and runs through 2024. Each year the project removes about 112,641 tonnes of CO₂e from the atmosphere, for a total of 3.38 million tonnes over its lifetime. To ensure permanence and quality, 20% of credits are allocated to a buffer pool in line with Gold Standard rules.

Proven results with lasting impact

Education and community empowerment

Tropical Mix has created more than 150 long-term jobs, training local workers in sustainable forestry, organic cocoa cultivation, and land stewardship. The project supports local schools with resources and environmental education programs, ensuring children learn not only in classrooms but also about the ecosystems that surround them. Families now benefit from diversified income sources, breaking away from dependence on cattle ranching.

Climate benefits

By restoring forests, the project removes an average of 112,641 tonnes of CO₂e annually. Over its full crediting period, this adds up to 3.38 million tonnes of verified removals. To put it in perspective, this is comparable to neutralizing the yearly emissions of more than 24,000 passenger cars. Independent monitoring ensures that results are transparent and reliable.

Forests and biodiversity

The project reforests degraded land with 20 native tree species and safeguards more than 30 others. More than 25% of the total project area is designated as permanent conservation land. These restored ecosystems create safe habitats and corridors for at least 15 endangered or vulnerable animal species, including brown-throated sloths and anteaters.

Community health and wellbeing

By moving away from intensive ranching, Tropical Mix contributes to healthier living conditions. Soils are restored, the air is cleaner, and families benefit from diversified agroforestry products, such as organic cocoa. Environmental education further reinforces well-being by connecting people with nature and building ecological awareness.

Jobs and local economy

Beyond ecological restoration, Tropical Mix builds long-term economic resilience. More than 150 jobs provide a stable income for families. Farmers gain access to new markets through FSC-certified timber, EU-certified organic cocoa, carbon credits, and seed production. The project keeps economic value local, ensuring that prosperity grows alongside the forest

What this means for people and planet

For communities, Tropical Mix means jobs, skills, and opportunities beyond ranching.
For children, it means better resources and education on environmental stewardship.
For forests, it means 13,242 hectares restored and connected wildlife corridors.
For the climate, it means millions of tonnes of CO₂ removed and stored safely.

Every hectare replanted is both a carbon sink and a sanctuary for biodiversity. Every job created strengthens a family’s resilience.
